Leather Varieties utilised at Paratus Leather Co.

Unique Characteristics of Leather 🌿

At Paratus Leather Co., we embrace the natural beauty of leather. As a raw material, each leather hide is beautifully unique, with its own set of distinctive characteristics. Leather may contain scars, scratches, and variations in texture, shade, and temper, all of which contribute to its one-of-a-kind look.

These natural imperfections are what make leather so special. Over time, your leather product will patina, darken, stretch, and may even develop marks, further enhancing its character. This aging process is a defining feature of full-grain leather, setting it apart from other "genuine" leather alternatives.

At Paratus Leather Co., we proudly use full-grain leather on every product, wherever possible, to ensure that your leather goods develop a rich, beautiful patina and last for years to come.

Authentic leather, comes in four basic grains

Full-Grain Leather

Full-grain leather is the highest quality leather available. It is made from the entire thickness of the cowhide, with only the hair removed. This leather is 100% authentic cowhide, showcasing natural imperfections that tell the unique story of the animal from which it came. These irregularities add character and make full-grain leather stand out.

As you handle the leather, it will develop a beautiful patina—a natural gloss created by the oils from your skin. Over time, this adds to the leather’s rich, aged look. This aging process is a highly sought-after effect that cannot be replicated by lower-quality or imitation leathers. Full-grain leather is also the strongest and most durable leather type, ensuring that your products last for years to come.

Crazy Horse leather is a type of full-grain leather. It is treated with natural wax, then buffed to perfection, enhancing its rugged, luxurious look. This process adds depth to the leather’s natural imperfections and creates a stunning variety of hues, further enriching its rustic appearance. Water-resistant and buttery smooth, Crazy Horse leather is both practical and beautiful, making it ideal for products that need to withstand the elements.

Genuine Leather

Genuine leather is a lower-quality leather that is made from leftover materials after higher-quality leather products are created. While it is still real leather, don’t be misled by the term "genuine" as it refers to leather that has been processed to a much lower standard compared to full-grain leather.

Corrected Grain Leather

Corrected grain leather is the lowest quality leather and has undergone extensive processing. The top layer is sanded down to remove natural imperfections, and the bottom layer is shaved to improve flexibility. The surface is then sanded again to create a more uniform, consistent appearance. Although it is still considered genuine leather, it lacks the durability and character of full-grain leather.

What is Crazy Horse Leather?

Crazy Horse leather is a unique type of 100% full-grain natural cowhide that has been treated with natural waxes and then buffed and polished to a rich, smooth finish. Despite the name, Crazy Horse leather is not made from horsehide—it is a full-grain cowhide commonly used in saddle making, hence its other name, Saddle Leather.

This leather has exceptional durability, water-resistance, and a beautiful, buttery-soft texture. Over time, wear and tear will enhance its natural beauty, as bumps and scratches change the leather's color, resulting in a multi-hued sheen that can only be achieved by the finest natural leather. The more you use it, the more character it gains, developing a rich patina as it absorbs the oils from your hands.

Pull-Up Leather

Pull-up leather is a high-quality, full-grain leather known for its ability to change in color and texture when pulled or stretched. During the tanning process, it’s treated with oils and waxes, which not only enhance its appearance but also provide conditioning and protection.

When pulled or stretched, the leather lightens in color in the manipulated areas, creating a unique and aged look. This effect adds depth and character, making each piece more attractive over time. The oils and waxes also contribute to its soft, supple feel while offering water resistance and protection from environmental elements. As it ages, the leather develops a rich patina, making each item truly one-of-a-kind.

Kangaroo Leather

Kangaroo leather is a premium, lightweight material renowned for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Sourced from kangaroos, it is incredibly soft and flexible, offering a unique combination of comfort and durability. Despite its lightness, kangaroo leather is highly tough and resistant to wear, making it a long-lasting choice for products that require both flexibility and strength.

This leather features a fine, smooth texture with a natural grain pattern, providing a sleek, high-quality appearance. Its thin yet robust nature makes it the perfect material for products where weight and resilience are key factors.

Leather Care 🌿

Leather is a natural fiber, and just like any fine material, it can dry out over time. To keep your leather goods soft, supple, and protected, we recommend applying a leather balm or conditioner.

For optimal care, use a natural leather conditioner specifically designed for full-grain leather. This will nourish and protect the leather, keeping it in top condition for years to come.

Important Leather Care Tips 💡

Crazy Horse This type of leather doesn’t require regular conditioning. While you can apply balm or conditioner, be aware that it may darken the leather slightly. Over time, it will naturally develop a beautiful patina through regular use.

Pull-up leather It contains oils and waxes that keep it soft and supple. Over time, these may wear off, when this does occur conditioning is essential.

  • Apply a natural leather conditioner or cream (like beeswax-based or oil-based balms).
  • Rub it in with a soft cloth and let it absorb naturally.
  • Avoid over-conditioning, as too much oil can make it sticky

Kangaroo leather To maintain suppleness and prevent drying out.

  • Apply a light leather conditioner sparingly (beeswax or lanolin-based is ideal).
  • Use a soft cloth to rub it in evenly, then let it absorb naturally.
  • Avoid heavy oils or waxes, as they can over-soften the leather.

Products in Daily Use:  Leather products that are regularly held, touched, or carried will require little to no maintenance. The natural oils from your hands will condition the leather and enhance its patina with use, making your product more unique and beautiful over time.

Spot Clean Stains – If there’s a stain, gently rub it with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking the leather.

    • Buffing gently with a clean, dry cloth.
    • Applying a small amount of leather conditioner to blend the scratch.
    • Using a warm cloth or a tiny bit of natural oil (like jojoba) to help smooth deeper marks.

    ❌ Things to Avoid

🚫 No heat sources – Avoid hairdryers or heaters for drying wet leather.
🚫 No harsh chemicals – Stay away from alcohol, acetone, or detergents.

By following these simple care tips, you’ll ensure that your leather products last for years and only get better with age.

🪶Engraved Leather - A Note on Your Unique Leather Piece

If your leather product is engraved, it receives a beautiful, custom finish.
During this process, a small amount of ash residue may be present — this is completely normal and temporary!

⚠️ We recommend handling with care and avoiding contact with light coloured surfaces initially, as some transfer may occur.
With regular use over the coming weeks, the ash residue will naturally fade, leaving you with a clean, lasting design to enjoy for years to come.
